Music Therapist

Harry Byford

I am an HCPC Accredited Music Therapist with particular experience working with individuals, young and old, with a diagnosis of ASC and/or learning disabilities and individuals with physical disabilities. I also work with individuals with complex behaviours and needs, and hold a position working in adult mental health.

I’m a guitarist, first and foremost, but will experiment with anything that makes a noise! I’m interested in a wide variety of genres and have explored the subject of implimenting field recordings in music therapy sessions.

I work with clients across the lifespan, from early infancy to old age and end of life. My client group includes working with children and young people that have diagnoses of ASC, PDA, learning disabilities and complex behaviours. I’m particularly interested in early years and work with non-verbal clients of all ages. My current work with young adult clients focusses on mental health, anxiety, ADHD, neurological disability, and exploring their experiences in the world. I also work with older adults that have dementia or are experiencing cognitive decline.

I am primarily a saxophonist and pianist, but I’ll try to turn my hand to anything to explore the sounds it may hold. I’m also a health & care research masters student at UWE. My research, so far, has explored experiences and meanings of silence in music therapy.

I’m a fully qualified Music Therapist registered with the HCPC. With experience working with children and adults, I provide bespoke therapeutic interventions using functional or psychodynamic approaches based on the client’s needs. I’m Neurologic Music Therapy trained, able to incorporate NMT techniques into work with clients with neurological conditions or injury.

I have a lot of experience working as a professional musician and educator, as well as being a multi-instrumentalist across strings and woodwind.
